The Top Five Vegas Movies
4) Swingers
3) Ocean's 11
2) Bugsy
1) Casino
Boy, did we get another good response this week: Honeymoon in Vegas, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the other Ocean's 11, Rain Man, The Cooler, Smokin' Aces, Con Air, Viva Las Vegas, Domino, and even Rush Hour 2 managed to get some votes.
To me, no movie quite captures the good, the bad and the ugly of Vegas like Casino does. There's something about the bright lights in that movie that suggest that they're kind of diverting your eyes from the dark side of town.
Bugsy and Ocean's 11 could switch spots and I'd be OK with it, but I think Warren Beatty's film really holds up and it's an excellent companion piece to Casino with the mob connections and whatnot.
As far as Swingers goes, I think it hit at the right time. Las Vegas was going through a kind of resurgence then and it was fun to get away for a couple of days (at least that's what Vegas was betting on, pardon the pun). It's more of a quotable movie than a great film, but then again, it's good a dozen quality quotes. And it's very Vegas-y.
Leaving Las Vegas is not my favorite, but it was on probably 80% of the lists that were submitted, so rather than justify Diamonds Are Forever or Fear and Loathing to the 80%, I'll justify Leaving Las Vegas to the other 20%.
