The Top Five Movie Princes

5 - Prince Herbert (Monty Python and the Holy Grail)

4 - Prince Humperdink (The Princess Bride)

3 - Moses (The Ten Commandments)

2 - Hamlet

1 - Prince Charming (Cinderella)

The good news for Prince Caspian is that this is a fairly easy list to break into. Can you believe the paucity of quality princes in movies? Can you believe I just threw out the word "paucity" in the 21st century?

We received a fair number of votes for Prince, which means Under the Cherry Moon has a lot more fans than anyone would've dreamed. Others not making the cut are Prince Valiant from the film of the same name, Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty, Simba, Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid, Prince Edward from Enchanted, and, yes, Will Smith as The Fresh Prince.

None of those bounded onto our list, but I'm happy one that I was rooting for did, even if it's only because I'm the one putting the list together: Prince Herbert from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Come on: "But I don't want any of that...I want to sing!" That's a no contest in my book.

Prince Humperdink is perhaps cinema's best modern crown wearing, sniveling brat. Chris Sarandon's performance in The Princess Bride is often overlooked because everything else about the movie is at least just as good, but he's the quintessential treacherous prince for me.

Moses is probably the most overlooked name on the list - surprisingly, we didn't get many votes for him - but just so you're aware: He was a prince, all right.

The top two are firmly entrenched. Hamlet is arguably the greatest character in dramatic literature; he's certainly one of the most legendary. Prince Charming is, though, the pattern, the blueprint. Indeed, a favorite book of mine, The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived, rank Charming 20th, sandwiched between The American Cowboy and Smokey the Bear. I don't know how Smokey qualifies as a person, either.
