Yep, They're Remaking 'Angel Heart'

The
Mickey Rourke Renaissance continues, sort of.
Rourke, who many people believe will get an Oscar nomination for his work in
The Wrestler, had certainly hit bottom in his
career, and he's clearly on the rebound, albeit a slow one.
I guess his last stab at glory the first time around was
Angel Heart, a strange movie that I'll always
remember for allowing me to see
Lisa Bonet naked. I was a teenager. She was a
Cosby kid. It was a big deal. The movie also starred
Robert De
Niro as the devil.
Now
Variety reports that Angel Heart will head back to theaters,
thanks to producers Michael De Luca, Alison Rosenzweig, and Michael Gaeta. OK, I
realize that some people think the novel is better than the movie (even not
having read the novel, I'll agree with those who hold that view), but do we
honestly need this remake? I mean, a new 9 1/2 Weeks at least makes a
little sense if you're scouring Rourke's filmography, but I can't think of any
valid reason to jump back into Angel Heart country.
That's not to say a remake would be awful, just
unnecessary. With the right cast it could still be interesting, I suppose,
and if they play up the film noir aspects it'll have more life, although there are so many great books dying for a movie adaptation, I'd hate to
waste resources on something that frankly doesn't have a very high ceiling the second time around.
