Is There a 'Hex' on Josh Brolin?
Friday, October 10, 2008 at 12:38PM
The news keeps improving for
Josh Brolin.
The actor who found a career resurgence last year with four films -
Grindhouse, American Gangster, In the Valley of Elah, and
No Country for Old Men - has grabbed a starring role as President Bush in
Oliver Stone's
W., which is due out next week, and now there's
talk that he might star in the comic book adaptation
Jonah Hex.
Hollywood Elsewhere reports that "the deal was
locked down" earlier this week, although Brolin's people deny it completely. We
know they're making a movie, though; Tom Jane was rumored for the role
previously, and Warner Bros. has had its sights set on the sci-fi western for a
while.

Jonah's a bit of the anti-hero, which is a great fit for Brolin. It would likely be his biggest payday, should he choose to do the role...if he's even been approached. But if you're the studio and you're casting Jonah Hex, Brolin would have to be on the short list right now. There isn't a better fit that I can think of whose career is also panning out as well, at least not at the moment.
One of the things we talk about a lot here at The Big Picture is saturating the marketplace with too many comic book movies. It certainly has been a good couple of years for both DC and Marvel, and with DC still in the silver medal position, I think the stories they need to focus on are the ones that play to their strengths.
That's why I'm completely behind a Wonder Woman movie, because Marvel can't counter it, and it's why if they get on the good foot with Jonah Hex, that could be another film that plays into DC's new commitment towards darker narratives as well as presents a character that Marvel probably won't compete with.

Umm , "Jonah Hex" is NOT a sci-fi western.
From his first appearance in 1972 in "All Star Western" (changed to "Weird Western Tales" a few months later) through the end of his regular monthly title "Jonah Hex" in 1985 his books have been westerns. Soon after that cancellation, there was a short lived (18 issues) series called "Hex" that transported the character to the 21st century where he became a sort of Mad Max- this short spinoff is the only time Hex was a sci-fi western. In later mini-series under DC's Vertigo label, Hex became more of a horror/supernatural western. In November 2005, a new monthly "Jonah Hex" began (and is still running) continuing the darker themes.
I have only know of him in the cartoons, one was a tie in with batman, and again was a tie in with justice league, the second time involving time travel.
be it the browncoat in me or other factors, I liek the word scifi western a hell of a lot more then western.
I should have explained this is the original article; sorry, I was busy going off on how good an idea the whole thing was to double back to this point...the description of the movie, at least what Hollywood Elsewhere had heard, was that it was set to be a sci-fi western. I guess that would mean they'd do the 21st century stuff. So, my apologies on any confusion.
