Swing and a Miss: They're Making a 'Bull Durham 2'
Friday, October 10, 2008 at 1:23AM
One big reason movie studios suffer black eyes from the
public is because there's a steady stream of bad sequels. If every follow-up
were as good as the last two Bourne movies or The Dark Knight,
you'd never hear anybody complain about sequels. In reality, we're expected to see Another Stake-Out, because the first one was a surprise hit and the producers snagged that up-and-coming Rosie O'Donnell. Or they think that if it was funny when Rick Moranis shrunk the kids, surely there must be something else around the house that can accidentally have its atoms reassigned.
If we love Alien and we love Predator, but we didn't so much love the combination of them, of course we'll line up to see an even less original story two years later! How does it all work? And why has it come to this: Bull Durham is getting a sequel.
I had the same reaction; why do think I'm writing this?
The story is over. There's nothing left to do with those characters. Go write something else. The Durham Herald-Sun (via Cinema Blend and MovieHole) reports that a follow-up to one of the all-time classic sports comedies will begin filming in Durham next spring. The good folks of Durham will enjoy the attention and the mad movie money, but the rest of us will be angry. I mean, seriously, what don't these people understand about unwanted sequels? I would wager that Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon will laugh any offer right off the table, even though they met making the original back in 1986. Kevin Costner, despite his spotty track record, will also turn this down cold. You can't improve on it, you can't add to it, and you can't recapture it. All you can do with this sequel is diminish the legacy of Bull Durham.
