New German Poster for 'Day the Earth Stood Still'

You know how they keep saying that these Presidential debates are for the undecided voters, that bloc of independents who could be swayed either way? That's kind of how I feel talking about this movie, if it were, say, the Reagan-Mondale election.

I have not seen a groundswell of support for The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I have seen - in more frequency and with greater conviction - a lot of resistance to this remake. On the one hand, I'm happy that so many people have apparently seen and loved the original from 1951.

There's another component, too, the moviegoers who just hate remakes of any kind, but in general, people seem to not want this movie around. I can understand that, although I believe they're trying to accomplish different things using the basis and structure of the first film. It's a remake, but it's going to be a bit different.

I also don't think Keanu Reeves helps the movie at this stage among its detractors. People are real hot or cold on him, too.

We showed you the first seven or eight minutes of the movie a few weeks ago, and again - not a lot of undecided voters out there.

Here's a new German poster, which isn't nearly as good as the U.S. one-sheets I've seen.

I'll be anxiously watching the early box office for this film. Even though it's a blockbuster in theory, I wonder if the backlash will be more pronounced down the line. This could wind up doing very well because of the audience that hasn't seen the original is probably greater than the audience that has, but if it's only mediocre, I think this might also have the potential to be a tidal wave of failure.
