Frank Darabont No Longer a 'Law Abiding Citizen'
Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 2:26AM
Things are really starting to heat up on
Law Abiding Citizen, but not necessarily in a good way. When we first heard about
it, I don't know how many months ago,
Frank
Darabont was named as the director. Good enough for me; after all -
Shawshank. And then
Gerard Butler came aboard and it became one of
those things you needed to watch more closely.

Then
Jamie Foxx was added to the cast at the end of
this week. And again, my reaction was, I'll take that action.

But apparently, Frank Darabont won't.
In a stunning movie, Darabont has quit the project, according to Ain't It Cool News, and it's not just a scheduling conflict. "Darabont is out of Law Abiding Citizen and I mean really out. It apparently ended ugly," reports the site.
About the only good news that can come out of this is that Darabont is a tell-all kind of guy. Sooner than later, you can expect to hear his side of the story. But the timing is really curious. Did he butt heads over casting, and if so, is it a problem with Jamie Foxx? Did the Shawshank Redeemer have someone else in mind only to see his choice overruled?
That's just speculation on my part; I'm just trying to connect the dots. But if it ended ugly (and Ain't It Cool followed up with the director to at least confirm he's off the project), I don't know what other conclusion we could immediately draw. I hope it doesn't turn out to be that specifically, because Darabont is too good a judge of talent to look down on Jamie Foxx, but there's something going on in the production that made him bail.
There's no word on who might replace Darabont, but he or she will inherit a movie with a ton of potential.

Just watched "The Mist" which solidified my stance on Darabont: "Dude should direct nothing but Stephen King adaptations. Someone give this man the Dark Tower and do it now.
(Hell, I'll take The Talisman).
