'Twilight' Sequel Reportedly in the Works

The closer we find ourselves to
Twilight, the more I'm growing convinced that
it could be a massive hit. We're not alone.
"When your soundtrack isn't even completed much less
released (not until November 4th), yet it's already in the Top 5 Best-Selling
Albums on Amazon based on pre-sales alone, you know you have a hit," writes
Nikki Finke at
Deadline Hollywood. "When Borders makes an
exclusive calendar and sells out the first printing in a matter of days, you
know you have a hit. And when the new trailer to your movie surpasses 3.5
million views less than 48 hours after its online debut, you know you have a
hit."

I think its appeal is undeniable, and credit has to be paid to Summit Entertainment for rolling the dice on this film and moving it into the weekend vacated by Harry Potter. And now Summit, which only began distributing films on its own in January, is potentially sitting on a stack of money, and those dice are rolling again.
Finke reports that Summit is moving ahead with a sequel to Twilight, a decision that makes perfect sense. The film is based on a book that's part of a bigger series, and if it does as well as I think it will do, a sequel is a must. How well do I think it will do? A lot of that is determined by the film's competition, and there's very little of that for its core audience.
The real key here is not how it plays among teenagers but the curious crowd that hasn't been exposed to the material before. And as huge as Harry Potter is, I know plenty of people who've never cracked one of J.K. Rowling's books but have seen more than half the movies. If Twilight can draw in any of the old vampire-happy Anne Rice crowd (and there's a little surface carryover), the soundtrack crowd, and/or the adult Potter crowd, I would put a conservative estimate at around $75 - $80 million at the domestic box office. And the more hype that builds, the higher that number goes.
