Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 1:30AM New Less-Than-Spirited Poster for 'The Spirit'
Earlier this year, we saw some
Spirit movie posters that actually talked. The
online-only shots were of the women of The Spirit -
Scarlett
Johansson-Reynolds,
Jaime King,
Eva Mendes,
and Sarah
Paulson. Aside from the fact that they looked a hell of a lot like
Sin City, they were pretty evocative.
If lost, please return poster to Bad Taste
The problem with looking like Sin City, of course, is that Frank Miller, who directs The Spirit, co-directed and created the comic universe of Sin City. The drum beats were loud: He's doing the same thing again.
You can't say that of the new poster for The Spirit, but I think you can also say that if you'd seen this before any of the others, you wouldn't be too impressed. And I think you can say that without any lettering, you'd swear this was a poster for a Zorro movie. (Actually, it's a dead ringer for the poster for The Shadow, starring Alec Baldwin.)
It's not that I hate it; I just don't think a teaser poster this generic works very well two months away from the film's release. Of course, this movie has had some trailers that left me scratching my head, too, so maybe they just don't have an established theme for their marketing.
The same could be said of Body of Lies, and that's a great movie. Of course, its box office hasn't been terribly good, which is why we bring up the marketing components so often. There is a little bit of a connection between these things, which is why you so often hear, "I dunno. It doesn't look very good."

If lost, please return poster to Bad Taste
The Spirit opens nationwide on Christmas, which traditionally has a really strong marketing campaign.

I looked at the poster first and kinda liked it, then I read your comments and all I see now is THE SHADOW!
Please tell me Scarlett's not going hyphen- now; it's not like she doesn't have enough in the way of consonants and vowels already...
Oh, I doubt she's going to be a hyphenator, I just added it because I could.
