Steve Carell en Français

Steve Carell is an oddity. I don't mean he's odd, or in any way peculiarly shaped, but rather that his career track is not something too many people can parallel.

He became well-known on TV, through The Daily Show and The Office, but then The 40-Year-Old Virgin made him a movie star. That movie helped bolster his Office audience as it rolled into its first full season, and the following summer, he appeared in Little Miss Sunshine, which would go on to gross tons of money and nab a bunch of Oscar nominations. Then came more TV, followed by Evan Almighty, which only lost money because it cost so damn much to make. Didn't hurt The Office (and neither did four questionable hour-long episodes to start last season), and then this summer there was more good will at the box office with Get Smart.

Can't say that for any of the Friends. Or Tom Selleck back in his day. Ted Danson's movie career never matched his years on TV. I'll be interested to see how long Carell serves two masters, although there's no question he's doing as good a job of it as anyone around.

For his next trick, Carell will star in Brigadier Gerard, a period comedy about a French soldier from the Napoleonic era who believes he's braver than he actually is. The Hollywood Reporter has all the details, including that the film will be based on a series of Arthur Conan Doyle short stories and that the script is being handled by a couple of writers from King of the Hill.

Obviously, it would be another in the long line of clueless protagonists Carell has become known for, and this may be one of several new films Carell works on during his summer break from The Office.
