Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 10:27PM Tim Burton Talks 'Alice in Wonderland'
There's another great article from Geoff Boucher at the
Los Angeles Times, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite online
writers. Over at the Times blog
Hero Complex,
Boucher has authored a profile of and an interview with
Tim Burton.
Boucher makes a wonderful point about Burton, which I'll paraphrase: When you're
watching a Tim Burton movie, you know it. And you can't say that about a lot of
mainstream directors. Nobody does that style like Tim Burton. Forget doing it as
well, they just don't do it the same way.
Part of the talk is about Burton's acceptance this
weekend of the Immortal Award at Scream 2008 in Los Angeles. Part of it is about
Johnny Depp.
Part of it is about
Alice in Wonderland, a project that's been
crying out for a live-action film for years, and Burton is the perfect choice to
direct it.

"It's a funny project. The story is obviously a classic with iconic images and ideas and thoughts. But with all the movie versions, well, I've just never seen one that really had any impact to me. It's always just a series of weird events. Every character is strange and she's just kind of wandering through all of the encounters as just a sort of observer. The goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of 'Alice.' And, you know, getting to do it in 3-D fits the material quite well. So I'm excited about making it a new version but also have the elements that people expect when they think of the material."
As for his good friend Johnny, who will play The Mad Hatter in the film, Burton says Depp loves playing these weird, wonderful characters. "That's never a problem. He doesn't like to be the same way twice," says Burton. That's good, it always keeps it fresh and all. And he likes the material we have here and he gets it. It's nice to have people involved that are fans of the material and all."
It's a really good read, which I've come to expect from Geoff Boucher, so check it out over at Hero Complex.

Lemony Snickets: A Series of Unfortunate Events, I swore it was a Tim Burton movie, but it wasn't, short of that you can always recognize Burtons style.
