Sex Drive shouldn’t be as funny as it is.
There’s nothing new about the geeky high school virgin with his sights set on a
girl way out of his league. We’ve also seen plenty of road trip movies, and even
the high school road trip sub-genre has been exploited over the past few years.
Despite all of that, this film manages to find unexpected laughs in expected
places.Ian (Josh Zuckerman) meets a girl online and lies about himself from head to toe to keep the dream alive. She invites him to come visit her in Tennessee. Two problems: He’s not who he says he is, and in the words of his older brother (James Marsden), “It’s probably a guy.”
Undeterred, Ian sets off on a two-day road trip with his best friends, the inexplicable ladies man, (Clark Duke), and the proverbial girl next door (Amanda Crew), who is probably more Ian’s speed than what’s waiting in Tennessee.
The inspired comedy is familiar to anyone who has been the unpopular teen or has done something immediately and obviously stupid. And if you’ve ever worked a humiliating mall job, you’ll feel Ian’s pain as he walks around wearing a giant donut suit begging for patrons.

Undeniably formulaic, Sex Drive is still a good two hours of cheap, teenage fun. More often than not, these movies come up short because they’re aimed at teens who will laugh at anything. Sex Drive, by contrast, wants us to laugh at specific things. And we do.
