Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 11:40AM 'Goonies': The Musical?
Richard Donner is raining on all sorts of
parades right now. We heard earlier in the week that Lethal Weapon 5 is "dead
in the water," which might be a good thing, and now he tells
Variety that another long-rumored sequel won't
happen.

In an article that also features a few great memories
about the film by its cast, Donner says a
Goonies sequel isn't in the cards. "We tried
really hard, and
Steven (Spielberg) said, 'Let's do it," confirms Donner. "We
had a lot of young writers submit work, but it just didn't seem to call for it."

But there is still hope for a continuation of every Gen X kid's favorite adolescent adventure: Donner is deadly serious about turning Goonies into a musical. "Wouldn't that be great," he mused.
The musical won't be a sequel - which, according to various reports, would have included original Goonies Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton, Corey Feldman, Sean Astin and others joining a new crop of kids on an adventure set in the Rocky Mountains - but rather the story we know so well. Just set to music.
