'Kung Fu Panda' Sequel Coming in 3-D
Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 3:33AM
Angelina Jolie
and Jack Black
will reprise their characters for the sequel to
Kung Fu Panda, tentatively titled
Pandamonium, which will be released June 3, 2011.
Variety reported what has been a no-brainer for
some time: Kung Fu Panda is an animated movie, it's a very good movie,
and it was a big hit, staring down Pixar's Wall-E in the U.S. and
worldwide, so naturally it will have a sequel.
Expect Pandamonium (the title is itself kind
of a no-brainer) to be in 3-D; beginning next fall, the recently liberated
DreamWorks will give all of its animated films the bulky, not-yet-perfected
plastic glasses treatment. We just announced that Black will be working on a
live-action spy
spoof with Panda writers
Jonathan Aibel and
Glenn Berger,
and they're coming back into the fold for this sequel, too.
My only hope is
that we see more of Po's dreams. That style of animation, the Samurai Jack
approach you see a lot of these days, really comes to life on the big
screen. I can only imagine its potential in 3-D and over a longer period of
time.Regardless, this is a sequel I'd actually be interested to see. Rarely do you leave a movie thinking there's a lot more story to be told, but I felt that way about Kung Fu Panda, much to my surprise.
