'Pineapple Express' Director Green Working With 'Freaks'

We know him best for
Pineapple Express, but director
David Gordon Green
actually has much more independent impulses. His previous film,
Snow Angels, was
dark and dramatic, and he coaxed Kate Beckinsale's best performance in years.
Prior to that, he made the overlooked horror movie
Undertow, in which he coaxed
the best performance we've seen out of Josh Lucas, not that it would take much.
Now Green will adapt the horror thrilla Freaks of the Heartland, based on the
graphic novel by 30 Days of Night writer
Steve Niles.
The Hollywood Reporter says Overture Films
recently purchased the rights to the graphic novel and will produce and release
the film.

What, pray tell, could a title as memorable as Freaks of the Heartland be describing? Apparently, a bunch of mutant children are born in the tiny town of Gristlewood Valley, and one boy tries to protect his six-year-old younger brother and the rest of the town's little monsters from their parents fears.
Sounds like it has the makings of a cult movie, which is perfect for an underappreciated filmmaker like Green.
