Trailer - 'Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans'

Here's my Underworld scorecard: The first movie was a pretty good action flick about vampires. I'd seen better, I'd seen worse. The second movie was crap. It was your basic "Hey, we made money on the first movie, so we're cashing in with a sequel!" sequel. Some of the action was OK, but the story was full of holes. And that's by the standard of the first one, which is by no means a tight screenplay.

So what are my expectations for the prequel? Surprisingly, I think this could be entertaining. The pressure's off, nobody's expecting anything, and with a new director and new star (Rhona Mitra), Underworld: Rise of the Lycans will probably have a totally new vibe.

Plus, I think they've recognized what the first two films did not, that Michael Sheen is actually a very good actor (The Queen, the upcoming Frost/Nixon), so writing more words for him is a good thing. Oh sure, it still looks as silly as hell, but I'm giving this one a chance.

Check out the trailer and see if you agree.

Have to admit, that trailer looks good.

It looks supremely silly.

The dialogue is so poor that the actors look embarassed while delivering.

Except Rhona, who should be embarassed about her lack of acting skills but isn't.

It also looks like they reused the sets from the first two films.

The reason that the first Underworld film work was that it was stylish. It was cheap to make but had decent cinematography which saved it.

Underworld Evolution was more expensive but lacked the style of the first, the camera work being positively amateurish.

Not a good way for a surprise hit to go.

I would pay to watch this only because of Michael Sheen!

Silly? Yes? Entertaining as hell? Probably.

I dunno.

The betrayal theme, which worked in the first film, just seems to get more and more laboured.

Evolution was not entertaining.

Alright, I can't wait now. This has got to be better than the second one.

How could it possibly be better with the visionary director and lead actress gone and a newbie special effects guy directing one of the worst female actresses today?

The first one was okay. The second was crap. This seems to have a little more concrete of plot (since its just the back story from the first movie), so it may or may not be better. It looks like this guy was stealing sets, lighting, and shots directly from the first movie. I have very low expectations.

But Rhona Mitra is gorgeous and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. There are maybe 4 gorgeous actresses who can actually act. And Rhona is not one. She's at least as good an actor as Affleck though.

Well, it's not necessary for Rhona Mitra to be in million dollar movies.

You can just gawk at som photos of her and we won't have to suffer her "acting".
