Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 12:30AM 'Bourne' Co-Writer to Adapt Video Game 'Army of Two'
I'll confess up front that I know zilch about the video
game
Army of Two. It came out in March, and it has
apparently sold a couple million copies, which is a good number.
Variety reports that fans of the game won't
have to wait to long to either see or publicly decry a movie version of the game
(because it's always one or the other), as Universal has picked up the rights
and will begin production next year.
The studio has hired
Scott Z.
Burns to write the script, and his laptop was one of three working on
the script for
The Bourne Ultimatum. Burns is still fairly
new to this racket, however; Bourne is probably the only film you've seen, and
it would have to be if you missed The Half Life of Timofey Berezin (aka
Pu-239). And I'm taking it by your blank stare that you did, in fact,
miss that one.

He's definitely on the rise, however, scripting Steven Soderbergh's The Informant, due out next year, and the fourth Jason Bourne movie, as well. Burns believes he brings something unique to the adaptation of the two-player game.
"I told EA right off the bat I wasn’t a gamer, and that appealed to them because they didn’t want to simply replicate the game," he said. Discussing how he sees it playing out as a film, Burns adds, "Because people experience the game in pairs, playing two guys who go against the world, [Universal's Scott Stuber] and I agreed this format presented an opportunity to make a great buddy film."
"The ambiguity of these private military corporations lends weight to an intelligent thriller with relevance to what’s going on in the world right now. You have contractors with their own agendas, and two guys whose friendship supersedes all the politics."
Sounds solid to me, but hell - I don't know anything about the game. If you've played it, let us know: Does it sound like Burns might be on the right path? Or should they just leave the video game a video game?
