And Now Get Ready for 'Saw VI'

No matter what happens this weekend, there will be a Saw VI. The horror franchise may have lost its stranglehold on the box office at the end of late October thanks to High School Musical, but it will still move forward this time next year.

Several months back, Bloody Disgusting indicated that David Hackl, who directed the most recent entry, won't be back for the sixth installment. Instead, it will be Kevin Greutert, who has edited each one of the movies. He certainly didn't outdo himself this time; the editing was messy and confusing in Saw V.

However, it won't be a total change; Tobin Bell and Costas Mandylor are returning (what else do they really have going on?), and Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton will be back for their tour of duty as writers. And they've really got their work cut out for them now. You know how usually in trilogies the second movie feels like it's setting up the end of the series? That's kind of what the past two Saw movies have felt like. They keep going back instead of completely moving forward, as if they're showing why this stuff will be important later.

I have a hunch I know where the next film is heading. Dunstan and Melton really left two options, and only one of them has any potential at all to be interesting. That doesn't seem to matter in this case; fans are still turning out in roughly the same numbers they have since the opening weekend of Saw II.
