Another Slice of 'American Pie'?

Though we don't have anything official from the studio to reference, Moviehole is running with the story that Universal will bring back American Pie for another theatrically released film. It would be the fourth movie in the series, unless you count the three direct-to-video spin-offs, and the first since 2003.

Moviehole says the success of those American Pie videos - Band Camp, Naked Mile, and Beta House - is a primary reason the studio thinks the title still has legs, and adds that a fourth film might focus on Jim and Michelle (Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan), who got married in the third flick.

The website says none of the principals have been "roped into" making the new movie, although when we talked to Seann William Scott earlier this month about Role Models, he still had great fondness for Stifler, so you never know. It's not as if the whole cast has gone on to bigger and better things.

Still, I find all of this incredibly hard to believe, especially since this report lists as its most concrete evidence that "American Pie 4 is said to be inching forward." It may well be that Universal is thinking of going with a proven movie brand - and frankly in an economically unstable time, we'll see fewer daring new projects and more retreads because audiences already know those names - but I wouldn't necessarily buy that it will focus on the major characters again. If the video sales are any indication, the name sells itself now and you don't need Stifler, Finch, Jim, or Michelle back on board.

Then again, with the stupendous appeal of Judd Apatow comedies, which appeal to an older crowd but deal with very similar subject matter, there's a sliver of hope that original cast members would roll the dice on an American Pie for thirtysomethings. But don't hold your breath.
