Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 12:59PM More New Photos from 'Star Trek'
We've got new
Star Trek photos from
Empire, including a brand new Kirk and Spock
cover with
Chris Pine and
Zachary Quinto.
We've felt this vibe before with previously released photos, and I still think Spock is standing too close for comfort. I
half-expect a 900 number to be listed at the bottom of this picture. Be that as
it may, Paramount is starting to step up their efforts to promote the film,
which was the only huge 2009 release not to represent itself at ComicCon back in
July.

Apparently, we'll get a new trailer leading into Quantum of Solace (so expect it online no later than November 12th), and with new Trek pictures rolling out about every other week, the movie is jumping near the head of the line in terms of buzz. After the Bond movie, the next true blockbuster will be Watchmen and then probably Wolverine, which we aren't hearing anything about at the moment.
In addition to the photos, Empire also talks to director J.J. Abrams, who comes clean about one of his major obstacles on the film, the nature of which might surprise you:
"For me, the costumes were a microcosm of the entire project, which was how to take something that's kind of silly and make it feel real...How do you make legitimate the pointy ears and the bowl haircut? It's ridiculous and as potentially cliched as it gets. How do you watch Galaxy Quest and then go make a Star Trek movie?"
So head over to Empire for a couple more new photos, and in the meantime, here's our first really good look at Zoe Saldana, vamping up for Uhura.

That comment made for my first good laugh for the day. I'm still having a hard time not laughing at Quinto with the Spock ears because I'm finding it difficult to see him as anything but the character he plays on 'Heroes'. The pictures of this new cast and new take on Star Trek's beginning has not impressed me. The actors all look too perfect, there's no edge or gritty feel to any of them. It's as though they dropped the Barbie & Ken doll collection into a box of Starfleet uniforms. At first, I'd dismiss it all as just my jaded view of being so familiar with the original series but I get the same feeling looking at the Twilight stills and trailer. They're all just too pretty and too smooth perhaps too much time in the makeup trailer?
