Robert Downey Jr. Still Looks Like a Hobo in New 'Sherlock Holmes' Pictures
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 4:03PM
I've decided I'm going to wait for a trailer to pay this
one any more attention. The reason I can't follow
Sherlock Holmes too closely is because I've had
so many misgivings about the project anyway and every picture of
Robert Downey
Jr. I see just worries me even more.
It's not that Downey's not a fantastic actor, because I hold him in incredibly
high regard. But there really are square pegs and round holes sometimes, and
that was my initial reaction to the casting and it still is. I must say, though,
that I was also down on
Jude Law being cast as Dr. Watson, but he
really looks the part these days. With Downey, my
concern is that this performance will be a hell of a lot like Johnny Depp in
From Hell, which is to say, not a great deal like Sherlock Holmes. And
Guy Ritchie
directing it is a tough sell in my book, too. I know that the studio and everybody else
wants a star for this role, but having just seen Ritchie's
Rocknrolla on the heels of Body of Lies,
I think Mark
Strong would have made a tremendous choice for the role of Holmes,
but he's playing the bad guy here instead. So
there are new pictures, courtesy of
The Bad and the Ugly, and Downey just looks
like he should be selling apples on the cobblestone streets of London or shining shoes or
something.

We've got another year to wait, and I promise not to update
you again until we see a bit of Downey in action, for my sake more than yours.

I know you aren't allowed to say whether or not you liked Rock N Rolla, but, assuming you did, this film should be in capable hands, especially considering who its star is.
But assuming you didn't???
God help us all!
Either way, Ritchie has never proven he can make anything but a Guy Ritchie gangster movie, which is what Rocknrolla is, and Robert Downey Jr. was in Gothika and The Shaggy Dog not that long ago, so it's not like he's never veered off the road. Professionally speaking.
I agree. Jude Law now looks the part and Robert Downey doesn't.
Normally though, Jude Law's acting gets my goat me while Robert Downey's doesn't.
So it will be a case of looks versus screen presence, I guess.
In fact, Guy Richie looks more like Sherlock Holmes in those pictures but I am certain he could not act him.
jajaja this guy looks crazy!!!
Perhaps Downey is preparing to investigate in one of Holmes' famous disguises as a tramp? He did that in several of the stories, you know. Could be they're just talking on set and it's not an actual still of the action?
Also, it's kind of odd for Watson to appear so much taller than Holmes, he always refers to him as being taller than himself (Watson) in the stories. Perhaps they fix it with CGI?
