'Dark Knight' Sequel Not in Pre-Production
Friday, October 3, 2008 at 3:04AM
Our position on the next Batman movie has been the same
since whenever the rumors started: Don't put much stock in anything you hear.
It's easy to understand, because there's never been a franchise movie that's
been as big as
The Dark Knight. I'd actually argue that
there's never been a movie of any kind bigger than The Dark Knight, when you factor in the
competitive marketplace, both in terms of theatrical releases and in various
forms of other entertainment previous phenomena simply didn't have to deal with.
We've reported these rumors, which I guess promotes the
phony news, but we have also argued against every rumor vociferously. Whether
it's casting or character development, or in the case of the most recent
headlines, that the movie was heading into pre-production in a handful of
months, we've said not to buy the hype.
The most recent report was being circulated earlier this week, and
we listed
several reasons why we didn't think it was true. Turns out it wasn't
true, so we kind of wasted our breath, or validated our own position.
IESB talked to some Warner Bros. executives who
confirm that there have not even been discussions with
Christopher
Nolan about a third film yet. He apparently just got back from a
month-long vacation, and while the studio would love to make that third movie,
it's nowhere close to commencing.
So, if you thought we were down on the notion just to be
contrary, just realize how many rumors there have been about this movie already,
and realize how stunningly fast the turnaround would be between Batman movies.
It's still a couple years away, probably three.

Re. "there's never been a franchise movie that's been as big as The Dark Knight."
What about Lord of the Rings:Return of the King & Pirates of the Caribbean:Dead Man's Chest? Their worldwide grosses are $1.12 billion & $1.07B respectively. Dark Knight is still under the $1B mark. Or are you talking about domestic BO?
