Brandon Routh Talks About Darker Superman Sequel

After the success of The Dark Knight, DC Comics and Warner Bros. decided to get even more serious about this comic book thing. Serious has a couple of meaning in this context, because on the one hand, they were going to pursue more titles and approach them the way they had the Batman films, and on the other hand, the tone will be a lot darker across the board, a move the studio implied would have helped its recent Superman Returns by also announcing that they're asking for a do-over on that one.

IESB sat down with Brandon Routh, who was Superman, you know, and asked him what he thinks of Superman living in the shadows.

"I don't think the character necessarily has to be darker, I think he is kind of dark in a sense, emotional dark, in Superman Returns, and the movie as a whole was slightly dark. They could have had more prowess in it I suppose, and I think that's one thing that can be done in the sequel, so I don't know how much darker you want to make it necessarily."

"You make the stakes higher, you make the villain darker, I think that's a way to do it. But I don't think Superman himself needs to be darker. He definitely has to struggle, how does Superman be a part of the world? And does he have to make sacrifices to be a part of that world? To fit in and what purpose does he really play in the world? Those are all kind of dark places to explore. But, I don't think Superman should ever be dark and brooding, that's not his nature. And that's now what people what to see."

I agree with him to a degree. I don't believe people expect to see a darker, brooding Superman and that it's not really the make-up of the character. Of course, the alternative is to not do Superman at all right now, which is what I'm voting for, exactly because Superman isn't dark, and right now, that seems to be where the mood is for our heroes - dark and fractured.

Routh has another opinion on the next Superman movie. He says he'd like to see Brainiac terrorize Metropolis. "I think there are a lot of things you could do with Brainiac. He's been given a lot of power and a lot of different abilities over the years in the comics," says Routh. "I know that DC is working on a Brainiac storyline that they are excited about and I think combining the two and have that flow between the comics and the movie would be a nice thing."

Damn it, Brandon, stop saying "nice." That's exactly the sort of thing DC wants to avoid right now.

Routh was solid in an otherwise weak movie; I'd give him another chance.

Routh was an amazing superman, imo.

I do hope if a new film comes to (inevitable) fruition that he's at the helm...

...orTom Welling.

Superman is very associative character; there's no mask: whoever plays him has to be able to carry superman, clark kent and everything in between. Routh was exceptional in 'returns', and welling - as clark kent in smallville - by jove has the character somewhat down to a t

Brandon Routh, first of all, looks like a Greek god...physically perfect for the man of steel, in my opinion, and I also liked very much his subtle, nuanced performance in the ultimately disappointing SUPERMAN RETURNS. Routh approached the role with an honesty and quiet resolve which I found quite affecting.

For instance, in the scene on the Daily Planet rooftop where he tries to explain to Lois (who I would love to see recast with Rachel McAdams) why he needed to return to Krypton, and then taking her aloft to re-connect and get her to see that people ARE in need of his help, and then, to finally say to her simply and with sincere regret, "I'm sorry I left you, Lois". He left, dare I say, a powerfully soulful impression in this and a number of other scenes. He wasn't "acting" he was simply speaking from the heart.

I think it would be a big mistake not to allow this talented, beautiful, and "soulful" young actor the opportunity to continue his journey creating a super man.

Brandon did a great job! I actually like the movie but I do agree it should have had a super villian and a big fight at the end. But Brandon was sooooo good I think he is the man for this role hands down! If they replace him I will not go to the theater to see the movie, I might pick it up on DvD but only might. I want Brandon back in the role as Superman/Clark Kent.
