Final Trailer for Bryan Singer's 'Valkyrie'
Friday, October 31, 2008 at 6:35AM
I have to admit, it sure looks like
Bryan Singer
was able to bring all the pieces together for
Valkyrie. It
was hard not to think the worst when the movie, which already had plenty of
trouble during its production, was bumped from late 2008 into 2009 and then got
moved again, this time to a curious December 26th release date. Hitler movies
and Christmas...yeah, since time immemorial, they've been intrinsically linked.

Plus with
Tom Cruise
on board, there's a very real chance that people will avoid it. That's his own
doing, and Cruise has been trying to patch up his image.

But the trailers and posters for this thing look remarkable. The story is compelling - German nationals in Hitler's army plot his assassination - and the cast is very good: Eddie Izzard, Bill Nighy, Terrence Stamp, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Wilkinson. About the only drawback is the accents. Couldn't they get an all-British cast if they were using their own accents? I mean, it doesn't have to be tinged with German, but hearing Tom Cruise as Maverick in there with several of the most esteemed English actors is irksome. Maybe that washes away once you get into the entire movie.
Tough not to get into these trailers, and here's the final one:

See you around Christmas, World War II assassination plot buffs!

It looks really good.
I haved a soft spot for good cinematography and I see loads in this film.
It is also a truly interesting story and from what I know of history they seem to stick to the facts pretty well.
The comment about cruises accent is what really stood out. There no need to anglify but he could have gone for a more neutral, middle of the Atlantic version to bring down the contrast.
It doesn't bother me as a critic, but the mixed accents always bother me as a viewer. It's usually very irritating when one guy can't or doesn't do the work to assimilate with the rest of the cast.
