Producer Promises "Kick-Ass" 'Wolverine,' Hints at Deadpool Spin-Off

I'm one of those rare birds who liked X-Men more than X2. I dig origin stories; action, I can find anywhere. So I was heartened - though you may not be - to hear X:Men Origins: Wolverine producer Lauren Shulder Donner discussing how the new spin-off stacks up.

"It's closer to the first X-Men in tone because it's a little darker, but there's a lot of action," Donner told Coming Soon. "It's his origin story...It's darker and sadder and it's kick-ass. There's a ton of action. It's really kick-ass."

I have zero problem with this. Loved the trailer, love the way Hugh Jackman plays the role, love, love, love the general premise of the origins, though I think Gavin Hood is an odd choice to direct. It could backfire, but if it's heavy on the drama, this could also be really special. "He had a learning curve," the producer explained, "but the thing basically for the director, honestly, it's sort of like, "Here's what I want..." and then the visual FX guys create that."

"A director doesn't have to know how to do it," she said, referring to the whiz-bang component of superhero moviemaking.

And then Donner tipped her hand about yet another spin-off when asked about Ryan Reynolds playing Deadpool in a standalone film.

"I hope so. I really hope so," she said. "He's so good at it."

With apologies to Tony Stark, I think Logan had the most intriguing Marvel origin story we've seen in a movie outside of Spider-Man, and we really didn't even get that much of it. So I'm definitely excited for Wolverine, and if they do it right, then they can bring on the rest of the X:Men Origins as far as I'm concerned.
