Del Toro Says 'Hobbit' Films Will Be "Two Episodes" of the Same Movie

There has been plenty of confusion and maybe even a bit of frustration over just what the hell two Hobbit movies would accomplish. After all, there's one book, and while the common belief has been that some of J.R.R. Tolkien's other Middle Earth writings would serves as the foundation for the second film - kind of a "bridge" between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, what that would look like was still a bit foggy.

But Guillermo del Toro, who's directing the films, told MTV that he and producer/co-writer Peter Jackson are looking at it a little differently than you and I might.

"The reality is that we stopped talking the first movie and second movie, and we just started taking about the movie - the two episodes, or two parts, as if they were a single piece of narrative. We don’t even call it the bridge movie, we just call it ‘The Movie.’ And this is great. When we found what reverberated, and we found it in one of our virtual meetings - we understood. It’s a movie."

That sounds as though The Hobbit itself might be two movies rather than the second movie being just a collection of Tolkien's other writings, which had been speculated for some time. I suppose that you can still find room for some of those other storylines spread throughout two movies, which is why there would still be rumors that Aragorn could have life in this franchise, because he's not in The Hobbit.

Del Toro also said that he doesn't foresee a time on this project where Peter Jackson would get back behind the camera.

"We talked about it. I normally oppose fully the idea of second unit so my first instinct is no, we will not have second unit on this film." Added del Toro, "If there is a scheduling conflict or a problem of that sort, we may consider it, but right now the idea is I shoot everything."
