Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 4:41PM Warner Eyes Ryan Gosling for 'Green Lantern'
From the Grain of Salt Department comes another big
superhero rumor.
Latino Review reported yesterday that
executives at Warner Bros. have zeroed in on their top candidate to play
Green
Lantern, and it's
Ryan Gosling.

He would be a very wise choice, especially if Gosling is in the mood to make a blockbuster. Normally, of course, he isn't, but we'll see how it plays out. There's certainly a strong precedent for quality actors taking superhero roles, particularly in the past five years or so, and that, coupled with a really good script, could be enough to make this rumor a reality.
Gosling's about the right age and since he's playing Hal Jordan, he does have one of the all-time great character arcs in the DC Universe. I mean, for one thing, he can and has beaten Superman. So there's that. Secondly, though it was wildly unpopular at the time, Hal Jordan went to the dark side in the mid-90s, becoming the villain Parallax. Anyone who's watched Gosling knows he can be a pretty convincing villain when the time calls for it. Could you imagine a villain turn as part of a movie franchise? I don't mean that emo/song-and-dance garbage from Spider-Man 3, either.
Personally, I love the idea. Whether or not it comes to fruition remains to be seen, but I like the way they're thinking here. Shooting may begin on Green Lanter next spring.
