Another Huge Weekend for 'Quantum of Solace' Overseas
Monday, November 10, 2008 at 5:38AM
With less than a week until the arrival of
Quantum of Solace on American shores, the rest
of the world has decided that this thing is going to be a massive hit. Last
weekend, we reported on the film's staggering success in Europe, breaking the
opening day box office record in the U.K. and earning one of the biggest debut
weekends ever overseas, despite only opening in three countries.
At that time,
we said it was likely that the new
Daniel Craig
Bond flick would be a $100 million movie by the time it opened here on November
14th. Scratch that. It made $106 million this weekend alone, and is already at
$160 million around the world in ten days.

Variety reports that the film just scored the 11th biggest international weekend ever, earning nearly $11,000 per location. I don't know what it cost to make, but I'd wager that Quantum of Solace will be in the black by the time it opens in the United States. Not too many blockbusters can say that. Factor in that the movie will open in key markets like Australia, Spain, and Mexico over the next two weeks (with Japan not scheduled to release the movie until January), and suddenly you can start to put this treasure map together for yourself.
Let's suppose that in the U.S., Quantum replicates dollar-for-dollar what Casino Royale made. Even if the film doesn't make another dollar overseas, it will have earned over $320 million. Now, odds are it will do better than Casino Royale here in America, just as it's outpacing the last Bond movie in other countries. What's the ceiling on its box office? Probably in the neighborhood of a whopping three-quarters of a billion. May not get to $750 million, but if it gets to $200 million here (about a 20% increase versus the last movie) and it performs similarly in the international markets, that's at least $715 million. So sit on that, Roger Moore.

Quantum of Solace is entertaining at least... a lot of high quality visuals, but the movie as a whole could stand to lose six or seven fewer chase scenes
