'Valkyrie' Through the Eyes of Bryan Singer

We've got another piece of compelling video for Valkyrie, the new Bryan Singer-directed espionage thriller about a group of German nationalists who tried to assassinate Hitler in 1944. Despite all the propaganda footage you've seen of Hitler, he was not universally loved in Germany. And even within the higher ranks of his military and government, dissention was common.

His greatest battlefield tactician, Gen. Erwin Rommel, widely regarded as one of the great military commanders that's ever lived, was not only an outspoken critic of Nazi crimes and policies, but he also refused to kill Jewish soldiers and civilians captured as prisoner. I mention Rommel because "The Desert Fox" is not featured in Valkyrie, although he was accused by the Reich of being involved in the plot that unfolds in the movie, and his punishment was a forced suicide.

I've got to hand it to Singer: The cinematography and production design looks impeccable in this film. And about the only weak link I can see is Tom Cruise. I think he's a perfectly competent actor who can be good from time to time, but he just kind of looks out of place here. Tough to go by snippets, I realize, but I can't shake it. On the plus side, it's good to know that screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie really is the illegitimate son of John Hughes and Stephen King.

Valkyrie flies into theaters on December 26th.
