Jaden Smith the Next 'Karate Kid'
Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 10:26AM
This has been rumored for a while and now it's finally
the real deal: Ten-year-old
Jaden Smith will star in a remake of
The Karate Kid. Jaden is, of course, the son of
Will Smith,
and appeared with his father in The Pursuit of Happyness.
Although he's clearly much younger than
Ralph Macchio
was when he invented the role in 1984 - by nearly 15 years - the move allows for
a franchise to be completed while Smith is still a teenager, if that's the way
they decide to go. Jerry Weintraub, a producer on the original film, will
oversee the film with Papa Smith and a couple of others, according to
Variety.

I can't tell if this is a move to capitalize on Jaden Smith or if it's just another punch-card remake. Most likely, it's the latter but Will Smith is co-producing it, so he gets to call the shots. The movie will reportedly have the same basic premise although the action will shift from California to China...you know, where the karate comes from. (Or not.)
The big question is never who's going to wax on and wax off or who will do it all for the glory of love, but rather who will play Mr. Miyagi. Any suggestions other than Ken Watanabe?

you can't replace Ralph or Pat this movie is a hudge step back
Well, you can replace Macchio, I think. Morita made that whole series.
