Baz Luhrmann Still Not Done Editing 'Australia'

How did Baz Luhrmann get himself into this mess? His new epic, Australia, which now has a hefty $130 million price tag, still isn't finished.

He tells the BBC, "We're right up against it, I literally have to - on Friday - push that button." And, making matters worse, he has to fly from Los Angeles to Sydney to complete Australia in time for its world premiere next week. Luhrmann has been working on the film for four years, and despite all the glorious footage we've seen from the film, there is still editing left to do in the final hours.

"This is really dangerous, I hope there's no problem with the plane going back."

There has been speculation that Fox didn't like the end of the film, which stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, and he agreed to change it despite having final cut on the film. That would explain how we got here, but the director denies any such changes have been made.

"You really think that on my films people tell me what to do? I don't think so - on my films I decide."

OK...then what is it? Why else would a film not be edited a week before I get to see it? And I'm not even important.

"I wrote six endings and I shot three," says Luhrmann, who adds that the film's big climax will be a surprise. Yeah. Especially if the screen just goes black.

Makes you wonder if he's just bluffing to keep the elements of the final cut from leaking too soon...I have a hard time believing that this film is going to be anything less than spectacular. The studios have to ship the reels way in advance anyway. There is no way this film isn't finished Colin Boyd!

I just hope he leaves it open for Austraila II: Attack of the Killer Koalas. Other than that, i don't care which of the six endings he uses. They're all going to be on the Special Edition DVD anyway...
