For Your Consideration: 'The Dark Knight'
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 6:04AM
In July, even with all the buzz and positive reviews, it
still didn't feel like
The Dark Knight was going to be a huge Oscar
movie. Certainly, it wasn't made with that in mind. But as the year has
progressed and other big movies have failed to garner enough attention for one
reason or another, The Dark Knight currently has very good odds do be
among the most nominated films of the year.

Warner Bros. has launched its official
For Your
Consideration website for The Dark Knight, and we thought that
would be as good a place as any to kick off this year's self-congratulatory
awards season. You can check out all the awards it wants Academy members to remember at the end of the year. For the record, the
Heath Ledger
push is in the Best Supporting category, although he was on screen longer than
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. Just sayin'.

Another cool thing about kicking off awards season with The Dark Knight is the chance you have to download the official script by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan. Print it out, have a table reading with your friends, and just go nuts.
We'll have more For Your Consideration stuff between now and mid-January, when the Oscar nominations are announced.

Everyone should know that the Oscars aren't an exact science.
To deserve an Oscar, I believe that a film should do something new and better than most films that came before it. In the case of The Dark Knight, I am struggling to think of anything that is markedly better than any other film.
The action was fairly stiff, the editing was fragmentary, dialogue was forgettable, plot had a lot of holes. The one memorable aspect was Heath Ledger's Joker. But that was mainly due to overacting.
I think Heath Ledger will be nominated and I think that he might win in lieu of the Oscars that he doubtless would have earned if he had continued his career.
I think Heath Ledger will definitely get a nomination and I certainly think he has a good chance of winning. That would probably be the only Oscar TDK brings in. It's a very good movie - possibly the best comic book movie ever made - but I don't see it being a big Oscar winner. I wouldn't be surprised to see it sneak in a few nominations, but Ledger is probably its best chance at winning one.
Yep. Can't argue with you, Michael. I think you have to reward the director with a nomination, and it will probably get a Best Picture nomination. Don't forget that last year's Oscars was the lowest-rated ever, so they want people to watch. On top of that, even though it's doing this end-of-the-year publicity blitz, The Dark Knight is the only movie that doesn't have to. Voters know the film, they love Ledger anyway, and they'll remember it when the votes go in.
Now, once it's on the final ballot and it's down to who wins, I don't think it will get anything but Best Supporting Actor. Depends on the rest of the Best Picture hopefuls, and I've only seen a couple, but I don't imagine it'll win the big prize.
