He's been talking about it for about a year, and now
Ridley Scott
is officially on board for a movie version of Monopoly, Hasbro's classic
board game of frothing greed. He'll produce and direct the flick for Universal,
and
The Hollywood Reporter says Monopoly will have "a
futuristic sheen along the lines of his iconic Blade Runner.
How will it all work? I have no idea. But I re-watched
Clue a few months ago and was surprised how well it held together.
Certainly, Monopoly doesn't have as well-formed a narrative as Clue,
but you can imagine some Citizen Kane-type story with a guy amassing all
this wealth, putting the screws to his rivals for years and years, and
eventually getting his comeuppance and losing everything. I don't know if that's what they'll use, but it would make some sense.

Pamela Pettler is writing the screenplay, and she has previously been a co-writer on Corpse Bride and Monster House. The futuristic turn is something I didn't really foresee; I would've thought it would start in the 1950s or 1960s and work its way up to a contemporary conclusion. Either way, I think there's something here, and I'll be curious to see what Scott and Pettler come up with.
In other news, the guys over at Platinum Dunes, who are remaking all the horror movies, have a deal in place with Hasbro to make a movie based on Ouija, as if Witchboard didn't satisfy that urge.

I'm producing and directing a documentary about the game of Monopoly called "Under the Boardwalk." It will feature interviews with some of the top players from around the world, as well as cover the history of the game and showcase how Monopoly has become such a huge worldwide phenomenon.
You can check out a teaser trailer, some clips from the interviews and follow our progress as filming continues at MonopolyDocumentary.com
If you are passionate about the game of Monopoly, I urge you to check out our website and email us!
It just sounds like tey will be using the brand name "Monopoly" to draw attention to a movie that could be called anything, really, like Wall Street 2.
It's a bit similar to Michael Mann's move to use the brand name "Miami Vice" for a film that had nothing in common with the TV-series, except some names.
Ridley Scott is one of my heroes in modern film-making, but he is quickly losing my attention.
He should focus on Blade Runner 2 instead.
I'm predicting that the Boardgame movie will replace the Superhero movie in the next five years as the dominant form of American movie entertainment. There will be huge blockbusters made based on Chutes and Ladders, Scrabble, Risk, and Boggle, as well as low budget yet lucrative adaptations of Cootie, Connect Four, and Uno. But because this trend is already coming down the pipeline, it's too late to jump on the bandwagon as a filmmaker. That's why I'm currently writing the spoof script tentatively called "Boardgame Movie".
The Wayans Brothers appear to be interested...
Watch for it at a multiplex near you in January 2014.
Madagascar 3: Hungry Hungry Hippos...
Actually, I agree with Lengthy Johnson that it really could be anything and Ridley should instead worry about a Blade Runner 2. I'll go one further and say that somebody's going to sequelize it eventually, so it might as well be him.
Yeh, and he should hurry up before Harrison becomes completely kooky.
Someone left a great comment on this story at Reddit:
"What an awful, awful idea. It's going to be 5 hours long and it'll end with every family storming out of the theatre not talking to each other."
In my attempt to help Ridley out with the script and everything, I've posted a synopsis on my blog.
