'2012' Teaser: We're All Going to Die!

I hadn't heard this trailer was on the way, but with
2012 in theaters next July, I'd say they're
getting a jump on it by releasing it now. It's just a teaser trailer, and
probably only some of the effects shots will make their way into the finished
product, but it's a trailer nonetheless.

His new one stars Thandie Newton, John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson, Danny Glover, Oliver Platt, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as people from all walks of life trying to dodge the cataclysmic events predicted by the Mayan calendar in the year 2012. As casts go, this is probably one of Emmerich's best, so maybe it's got some potential.

I remember reading a few years back, right before Godzilla came out, that Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich were poised to become as powerful in Hollywood as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Well, we all know what happened after that...
The hype bubble surrounding the big green lizard burst, and Emmerich has been clawing his way back to legitimacy ever since. And Independence Day is still his best movie.
The Day After Tomorrow and 10000 BC were wretched, but showed signs that Mr. Emmerich is returning to form. Will 2012 be the movie he does it with? And how the hell did he convince Chiwetel Ejiofor to join the cast?
As I ponder Emmerich's career (Yes, it is okay to imagine me sitting in a leather chair smoking a pipe and wearing a robe), I am reminded of Jerry Bruckheimer. As you recall, there were the glory days of the eighties when he teamed up with Don Simpson that produced such fruit as "Top Gun" and "Beverly Hills Cop".
Then Mr. Simpson pulled a Scarface, stuck his head in a mountain of cocaine, and never came back. The world wondered if Bruckheimer would ever recover...
Well, he did, and now we have a trilogy of Pirates of the Carribbean movies, The CSI series, and Michael Bay.
So, can Emmerich bounce back? Yes! He made Independence Day and, as far as I can tell, understands that Scarface was just a movie. There is still time to fulfill the prophecy, and enter the stratosphere of a Lucas and Spielberg!
Of course, that is a lofty goal, and the reality is that Mr. Emmerich will probably land in the company of two other promising directors/entities who never fully realized their potential: Renny Harlin and the Wachowski Bros...
Especially if 2012 sucks.
