Fearless Forecast - Bond Takes 'Solace' in $60 Million Plus

We saw a big weekend for Madagascar (although I sure didn't see it being that big), so will history repeat itself with Quantum of Solace? Yes. And I think it will do so almost dollar-for-dollar.

The new James Bond movie is obliterating the competition around the world, and by the time the dust clears Monday, Solace could be in the $300 million ballpark in global ticket sales. It's already over $160 million, and it hasn't even opened in the U.S. I'd be really surprised if this debuts under $55 million, and I think $60 million is a good, conservative guess. I know the films have been opening at this time of year for a while, but it makes you wonder what would happen if Quantum of Solace, following up the most successful film in the series, had been a mid-June release.

But the opening weekend isn't the big issue with Bond, in my opinion. I wonder how long it will hold an audience. If it can be a player for a month, then this could beat even Casino Royale's impressive showing.

Because everyone expects it to do very well this weekend, there are no other major releases scheduled. You see that a lot, although Mamma Mia! initially did well opening against the second-biggest movie ever, and it has been arguably the world's strongest non-tentpole film of the year in the months since then. So perhaps that philosophy needs to be reconsidered. But without direct competition, I think Quantum of Solace should have a huge weekend and could eventually top $175 million domestically if audiences respond favorably in the second weekend.

The Top Five:

1 - Quantum of Solace ($63 million)
2 - Madagascar ($36 million)
3 - Role Models ($10 million)
4 - High School Musical ($6 million)
5 - Changeling ($4.5 million)

Last week's Fearless Forecast was a trainwreck. We didn't predict Madagascar would hit $63 million and we didn't think Role Models would roll up on $20 million. Also, Soul Men was a bomb. So, do me a solid, Quantum of Solace, and make right around $62 million. Thanks.
