'Twilight': Soundtrack on Top, Sequels on the Way
Friday, November 14, 2008 at 2:49AM
On Wednesday afternoon, I stood on a makeshift stage in
a shopping mall with three of the cast members of
Twilight in front of about 1,500 - 2,000
screaming teenagers. The young fans were so caught up in the moment that they actually
cheered for me. What's that tell you?
For example,
Billboard has announced that the soundtrack has
already hit number one on its Top 200 album chart, and apparently, that doesn't
happen too often for a film that hasn't been released. It's only the third
soundtrack to top the charts this year, and with 48,000 digital downloads in a
week, Twilight becomes the second-most-actively downloaded soundtrack
ever, behind High School Musical 2.
It tells me that this movie is going to be a smash, and there's more proof flooding in everyday.

And The Hollywood Reporter says that Summit Entertainment is gearing up for sequels to the film, all based on Stephenie Meyer's tremendously successful book series. The second and third books, New Moon and Eclipse, will both employ the services of Melissa Rosenberg, who wrote the adaptation for Twilight, which met with Meyer's approval. The fourth book, Breaking Dawn, does not yet have a writer, although Summit has acquired the rights to it, as well.
This is a tremendous business move by Summit, which has all of a sudden become a real factor at the box office. We won't see the real effect of Twilight until the sequel is officially announced and the other studios either scurry to counterprogram against it or leave that weekend alone, throwing up a white flag of surrender. Summit has only been an independent production house for two years or so, and to be in this position now is quite a feat. The studio has done a masterful job creating a niche and a need with Twilight, and gobbling up the sequels (which will have their own high-selling soundtracks) is an easy way to keep the money train on its tracks.

I pre-ordered both the soundtrack & my ticket for the midnight show of Twilight on Nov 20th.
It was the smart move.
I also have pre-ordered my ticket to the midnight show. I was going to take the easy road and see it at the press screening, but I think this is definitely the way to go.
Dear God, make it stop. Seriously, I can't be the only person who thinks these books are just terrible, right? (full disclosure, I read the first two and made it halfway through the third before I decided life was too short.)
