Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 8:23AM Where Do You Rank 'Quantum of Solace' Among 007 Films?
We're hearing some great numbers from the opening
weekend of
Quantum of Solace. There's every likelihood
that it will have the best opening day and the best opening weekend in the
history of the franchise, and yes, it will probably be the highest-grossing 007
film overall, as well.
Perhaps that will talk
Daniel Craig
off the fence about returning for a third movie, which he said depended on this
film's performance.
But what did you think of the movie now that you've paid
your cash to see it? More importantly, where would you rank Quantum of Solace
in terms of Bond movies? (If you need a refresher course, we got all
nostalgic yesterday and published a chronological pictorial of posters for each
flick). Do you have it higher than
Casino Royale or is it about on par with one of
the cheesy, bad Brosnan efforts?
I've heard reactions both ways. Personally, I think it's
squarely in the top ten Bond movies, but since at least six if not eight of
these movies simply aren't very good, that may not be a huge accomplishment on
its own. I think Casino Royale is the best of the bunch, and then, like
Beatles albums, I change my favorite Connery film every time I see one of them.
But one of the first three or four would be in second place.
So is Quantum a keeper or would you rather watch
A View to a Kill again?

Without hesitation I'd rank Quantum of Solace in the bottom 3 Bond films. It's such a mess. No coherent plot, lackluster dialog, dull "babes" and dumb action sequences. Bond used to be Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but now he's Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Punch Punch Slap Slap Boom Boom Crash Crash Yawn Yawn.
absolutely loved everything about it. I can't stand the more cheesy Bond films. This one was centered around one main theme - Vengeance. Everything in it had a focus to that. The action sequences were phenomenal - everyone in our theatre was jumping back a bit and gasping in parts. Loved the more artistic parts too - entertwining the Palio in Siena with a chase scene, and the same with the opera (Tosca). This for me is right up there with Casino Royale. Can't wait to see Bond back for a new one.
THIRD!!!
(Seriously, Orson Scott Card would be proud of me)
Wow, the two first posts here are very different. I for one thought the movie was pretty bad. Its such a letdown, not as a Bond moive, but as a sequel to Casino Royale. Because they left us with such a good movie, we were expecting something really great this time too. The movie had it's good parts and some action sequences were really great, but most of them were incohesive, messy, and boring.
I really enjoyed the movie, and thought it was one of the better Bond flicks I have seen. I did think that the plot and action sequences were at times messy, but both points seemed to smooth themselves out. The biggest problem is that this film feels like it's missing something, when it's done, you don't quite feel that but on the way out of the theater you do. It was missing something better, maybe a better ending, maybe adding another fifteen minutes to kind of put the plot together better. As far as Bond goes though I really love Craig, loved him in Layer Cake and I love him as Bond, but this is coming from someone who disliked Roger Moore's Bond, and loved Sean Connery's Bond. Over all the movie is a good film though maybe 5 in my top ten, this is with Casino Royale at number 1.
Anyone who would rank this in the bottom three is so delusional that they shouldn't be allowed to participate in human society. Seriously? Bottom three? The fact that Roger Moore made MORE than three is evidence to the contrary.
This is an excellent outing, and a wonderful follow-up to "Casino Royale." It's very interesting having a proper sequel and complete continuity in a Bond picture. The dialogue is sharp, the plot well-realized, and the action sequences absolutely first-rate. I've seen complaints about this film lacking character development. To that, I say: are you for real? Character development has been the hallmark of the Craig Bond movies. Not only is 007 developed nicely, but M displays dimensions previously unseen too.
Just an awesome, awesome movie.
I rank it in the top 10. Its certainly not nearly as good as casino, but to say this movie is terrible is to neglect the story line and the fact that they made bond movies in the 80s. Did you see the timothy dalton/late roger moore era! Who cares what the villain's occupation was in this movie. The whole point of this movie is revenge, thats it. He is getting revenge for the death of vesper. This movie is a transformation for bond, you will see him be more "bond-like in his 3rd movie. Watch casino royale and then watch quantum. Afterwords, try to justify saying this movie has no storyline.
A View to A Kill is ten times worse than this man. Please.
disappointing ! fire this director ! this didn't even feel like bond. too much action, too little bond. that red head was awful. the lot was convuluted and took a back seat to th action.
