Are We Close to Seeing Footage from 'Avatar'?

Are we inching closer to seeing some footage from James Cameron's Avatar? Could be. Jim Dorey, the guru at Market Saw who helped us out with our recent article on the digital content industry in New Zealand, received photos of what look like film canisters labeled as teaser footage from Avatar, clocking in at nearly four minutes long.

The film isn't due out for another year, but having a teaser sooner than later would definitely help the cause. After all, the 3-D epic is said to be in the $300 million range, which is nearly enough to pay for a resort junket for AIG executives. Dorey speculates that the footage could be one sequence from the film rather than a traditional teaser, and that makes sense for a couple of reasons:

1) Four minutes is way too damn long for a teaser.

2) With the amount of post-production required on that film, it would be easier to complete one part first, issue the first look at Avatar, and continue working on the rest of the effects, rather than waiting until James Cameron says it's perfect before the world sees a glimpse of it.

Because we don't have an actual source for the photos, proving they're the real deal is hard to do. But it seems like a rather strange thing to falsify. And why? Who would benefit from it being fake and how? Another reason they might be real, as Dorey points out, is that Cameron has two upcoming speaking engagements where showing footage from his first studio film in a decade would be a perfect fit.
