New 'Benjamin Button' Posters and the First Fawning Review

The first official review of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button has been published over at Variety, and critic Robert Abele says the new David Fincher film starring Brad Pitt has a chance to become "a category-sweeping juggernaut, with Fincher on track to score his first Academy nomination.”

Abele also notes that Fincher has "fashioned an effects-laden but character-driven epic that recalls the sweetly doomed, emotional glamour of Hollywood's golden era." The review is a teensy bit overwritten (the opening sentence is 69 words long), but Abele's message is clear: This one's a knockout.

Of course, first reviews tend to run to the extremes, so we'll wait until more word comes in before we get more excited for Benjamin Button than we already are. I think it looks great, and love the combination of Fincher, Pitt, and Cate Blanchett with this F. Scott Fitzgerald short story about a man who ages in reverse.

A new series of posters tries to take advantage of that premise, sort of. I don't think they're obvious enough if you have no idea what the movie's about. It just looks like a goof, having the text written backwards. However, I guess if you're trying to sell this movie to people who don't know what it is, there are worse sales tools than Brad Pitt's mug.

Many thanks to IMP Awards
for the new one-sheets

Benjamin Button will be released on December 25th.
