Another 'Spirit' Poster, Another Change in Direction

Not to keep picking on The Spirit, but what in the hell are they doing with this movie? I'm a big believer in how much marketing impacts a film's box office. Think of it in political terms, how the candidates needed to sway independent voters. If they don't sell the independents, they're not going to win.

Same thing here, really. The Spirit has a built-in crowd, although I don't believe it's a huge contingent. It's coming out at a very crowded time (Christmas), so it needs to convince people on the fence that it's the best option. No, good trailers and posters don't mean a movie's any better, but if you have good marketing, undecided audience members might just say, "That looks good, so I'll check it out."

So if you're on the fence in late December and you've seen the fantastic trailers and posters for Valkyrie and you've seen the mixed bag of stuff for The Spirit, you might not be as curious to see the Frank Miller comic book adaptation.

This new poster combines the best and the worst of the film's marketing, putting its great character posters in the background while The Spirit (Gabriel Macht) is apparently on the run from a SWAT team or something. I like the idea of the billboards in the crowded streets, but it's way too busy.

I dunno...I just wish they'd find one approach to use and stick with it. It's all a bit messy now. The Spirit comes out on December 25th.
