'Quantum of Solace' Shatters U.K. Opening Day Record
Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 8:20PM
Earlier this week,
we said
goodbye to one Harry Potter box office record in England, when
Mamma Mia! topped the first film in the series to become the UK's
all-time box office king. Or queen, if you will.
Variety reports that another Potter mark
has fallen, with
Quantum of Solace torching the previous
Friday opening record in the U.K., grabbing £4.94 million in ticket sales on its
opening day. That equals about $8 million, a full $1.5 million more than
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Original British estimates had Quantum of Solace arriving with a £13 million debut, or $21 million, which is a huge number considering that there are a lot fewer theaters than we have in the U.S. Those estimates may be eclipsed by the end of the weekend, setting the table for a huge run for the latest James Bond film.Quantum of Solace, which returns Daniel Craig as James Bond, opens in the U.S. on November 14th, and we've already said we believe it should debut in the $55 - $65 million range.
