'Jonah' Hexed?
Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 10:34AM
The post-apocalyptic comic book western adaptation
Jonah Hex looked like it was going to be on the
fast track for DC and Warner Bros. Directors were hired, there was talk that
Josh Brolin
would play the lead role, and because it was a little bit different than
anything else either of the major comic companies had tried (OK, a lot
different), Jonah Hex had a chance to stand out.
Then came word yesterday from
Variety that
Mark
Neveldine and
Brian Taylor were off the project, and that
Jonah Hex would need to find a new creative team. Uh-oh, Spaghetti-Ohs. That's
certainly a shot across the bow. But why the split? Perhaps the answer comes
from Josh Brolin himself, who, while not officially signed on yet, has
definitely been tapped for the role. If you ask him why Neveldine and Taylor
have moved on, he might say it's the script.

“When I first read it I thought, oh my God it’s awful!” Brolin told MTV News. “And then I had a moment a week later and I thought why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.”
That's certainly an odd approach, but even though he seems to love the awful, that's usually not what producers and financiers want to see. Could it be something else that took the Crank writers and directors off the project? Possibly. But this one's kind of hard to ignore.
Still, Brolin thinks the awful script has potential, a real fixer-upper:
"It’s so tongue in cheek. It’s so ridiculous. But once I started putting people in my mind and saying what if I put Malkovich in this role then what does this movie become? Now let’s put this producer and director on it and think about how it plays out. Then it becomes fun. Now I love that movie. If you have a great filmmaker come in then suddenly these gags and characters become interesting.”

DAMN. I was looking forward to this! Even though I think Thomas Jane is better suited for the role.
If it's completely whacked out, then Tom Jane is a better fit. I wonder when it will get back on track and if Brolin will hang around in the interim; he's kind of a commodity these days.
