Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 6:11AM 'Twilight' in Elite Company as Sell-Outs Multiply
Let's update you on
Twilight's advance sales and possible box
office glory. I kind of missed the boat on my super early opening weekend
prediction, telling someone last week that I doubted it could do $60 million in
three days. I don't think that way anymore.
And it's all because of the lofty company Twilight
is keeping on the Fandango chart of pre-sales. Currently, the vampire
flick/cultural touchstone has sold out about 2,000 showings, 600 of them
midnight screenings, according to
Variety and Fandango, but when you look at
where the film's total sales rank, it's pretty staggering. Here's the top ten
list of total advance ticket sales on Fandango:
2 - The Dark Knight
3 - Harry Potter 5
4 - Harry Potter 4
5 - Pirates 3
6 - Hannah Montana
7 - Twilight
8 - LOTR: Return of the King
9 - Spider-Man 3
10- Sex and the City

1 - Revenge of the Sith
2 - The Dark Knight
3 - Harry Potter 5
4 - Harry Potter 4
5 - Pirates 3
6 - Hannah Montana
7 - Twilight
8 - LOTR: Return of the King
9 - Spider-Man 3
10- Sex and the City
If you're a hater, you could say that Hannah Montana really didn't make all that much money, so the pre-sale numbers don't mean that much. OK. So one out of ten of these movies made less than $150 million. Here's part of the argument you're missing, though: Hannah only played in 700 theaters. It couldn't have possibly made that much money. On its opening weekend, it did take in $45,000 per screen, though, which is actually almost $10,000 more per theater than The Dark Knight. So, let's be clear: There are no small numbers on this list.
Can it break $50 million? $60 million? And how will its success in the United States transfer to other countries? At this point, I wouldn't bet against Twilight. At all.

Smart move, not to bet against Twilight : )
After attending an advance Twilight screening Tuesday with five 20-something yr old local girls, I predict it will rake in over 60 million at the box office this weekend.
My new friends showed me their Thursday midnight tickets AND their tickets for Saturday. TwiHards will be buying their tickets in bulk this weekend - which will give them what they want = the rest of the books being made into sequels.
The Twilight soundtrack is quite good, my non-Twilight friends love it.
I am not looking forward to the flood gates of being saturated in this. Then again this is a far better flood then Hannah Montana which very much needs to be over by now.
