We've got a couple new
Star Trek character posters, which go along
with the recent additions of the Kirk and Spock upgrades. As you can see, we've
got Lt. Uhura (the lovely
Zoe Saldana) and the evil Nero (Eric
Bana).

I've gotta say, the Entertainment Weekly covers notwithstanding, they've done a great job with Star Trek so far. And that new trailer is definitely a keeper. J.J. Abrams seems to be steering this in the right direction. We'll see more between now and May 2nd, and I'm looking forward to what they've got next.

Yeah, I'm thinkin' I'll eat a lot of crow on this one. The trailer looks amaziing, and actually, the biggest problem could ultimately be the "villian of the week" syndrome. Iron Man had the same problem, with a virtually useless Jeff Bridges character. But as with that franchise, there was so much coolness caked on, it was an almost unnoticeable blemish...
Hey, guys. HighwaymanHoss, from stumbleupon sent me. Cool posters. I can't believe that's Eric Bana! It doesn't look anything like him. I'm a huge trekkie, they haven't disappointed me yet. BUT, I'm really worried about this one. It's not like we got used to these guys from the series and had a bunch of back story to play off of. If they just go for the ''Look how cool and modern and blockbustery we are'' thing and leave the soul out of it, I'll dig up Gene Roddenberry, reanimate him and turn him into a super zombie and send him after the people responsible! ...Or, I'd like to, anyway. I couldn't do that, of course. But I could totally tell the two people I know who are also trekkies and we could silently hate them which would also be pretty vengeful...though not as cool or time consuming as the zombie thing, I guess.
Outside of my earlier remarks that this cast was too pretty and lacking in any sort of weathered grit the originals had, I'll reserve comment on the film until I see it. Abrams' has expressed in interviews I've seen that his take is one of reinventing the Trek franchise in a way that it's something he'd want to see. Quite possibly (and I'm sure hopefully) something a whole new generation of people will want to see as well.
Clearly Trek has been in need of ...something and for some time. Whether going back to the beginning and telling it in a more genuine and thoughtful way is that thing, I just don't know. Right off the bat it seems like a tremendous uphill climb as opposed to just starting something completely new and forward from what has been done. It will no doubt come under heavy scrutiny from Trek's loyal basin of followers and be hammered with comparisons to the original. Should it withstand all that there's an obvious question that remains... will anyone want to take up this retread?
It really falls into that category of been there and done that and while hindsight is always 20/20 it doesn't mean that clarity improves the view. A good many people liked the original for what it was and the effects it had were fine because it was always more about the story narrative, the human interaction that drew people in. So when I read where Abrams has said that they'll be "breaking new ground in action, drama and visual effects" I have to wonder ...really? Sure, compared to the original series this will look light years better but I hope this isn't so much about bigger action sequences and fx. That's always been the garnish in what was good about Trek the true meat and potatoes was the story at the heart of it.
Oh well... just have to wait and see what happens.
