New International Trailer for 'Benjamin Button'

There's a new international trailer for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, one of the most appropriately titled films in a while. Can David Fincher finally score an Oscar nomination? Is this the one that gets Brad Pitt an Oscar, or at least a place on the Best Actor ballot? Is the adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story compelling enough to last two hours or more? Will it just move too slow?

And then there's the $64,000 question, which in this case is a $150,000,000 question: Can David Fincher direct a hit again? Zodiac didn't turn a profit, at least not until DVD, and really only Panic Room and Se7en were runaway successes, and neither one of those got anywhere near $150 million.

I don't anticipate it being a hit unless it's absolutely perfect and everyone agrees on that point. I seriously doubt its mainstream appeal, which is why releasing it on December 25th helps give it a good shot at the Oscars. If it came out in September and people stayed away from it, the odds wouldn't be in its favor.

If you haven't seen the trailer yet, here's a good chance to catch up. It looks great, but I can also see how there's potential for this to come apart at the seams.

Benjamin Button will be in limited release beginning December 25th, expanding to more cities in January.
