Writer Keeps 'Iron Man 2' Details Under Wraps

One of the significant changes being made between Iron Man and Iron Man 2 is that the script for the sequel will come from the laptop of Justin Theroux. He replaces a team of writers who helped make the first film a $300 million hero this summer.

Theroux also co-wrote Tropic Thunder, which means he got to know Robert Downey Jr. a little bit. In fact, as Theroux tells UGO, Downey actually introduced Theroux to Marvel brass when the subject of this sequel came up.

The UGO piece is a great, wide-reaching interview, talking about both Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2 at length. Of particular interest is Theroux' insistence that the script is still in a fairly early stage and that he and Marvel's Kevin Feige recently paid a visit to Downey in London to bang out a few ideas.

"We were talking with Robert, who’s out there doing Sherlock Holmes, he was giving his input and his notes...It’s just sort of chugging along. The crews, I think, are now starting to see what they need to make, and the places that we might be going and all the rest within the story."

The other significant change between Iron Man and Iron Man 2, of course, is the unceremonious dumping of Terrence Howard for Don Cheadle in the role of Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine. "Whatever their reason is, I’ll leave that up to Marvel. We’re writing the thing, virtually the same for Rhodey that we would for any actor," said Theroux.

"Whoever’s in that part is going to have to play that part and make it work for Jon (Favreau) and the fans who are watching the movie."

We already know we'll see Iron Man 2 in the pole position for summer 2010, but there's still plenty that needs to be finalized for the sequel, like Gwyneth Paltrow's involvement for instance, and the identity of the villain, which Theroux claims to know but says, "I’m not going to let that cat out."
