'Twilight' Stars Cash in on Sequel

We learned over the weekend that Twilight would be getting a sequel, something that was pretty much decided before the film raked in $70 million in its debut. And now, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, the producers are willing to spend money to make money.

Stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson may receive $12 million a piece for their roles in New Moon. How much of an increase is that? Well, Twilight only cost $37 million, and for the sequel, two cast members will eat up 66% of that amount. Clearly, though, since the film turned a profit early in its second day in theaters, Summit Entertainment can afford to keep its stars happy. Pattinson and Stewart made a reported $2 million each for Twilight, so they're looking at a 600% pay raise.

Director Catherine Hardwicke has not signed on yet, and in an interview given Sunday, she didn't sound 100% positive that she'd be back.  "I want to be sure that [the second film is] going to be done right. I don't want to rush into it. It's not like Friday the 13th or Halloween; you can't just do it super fast and knock another one out."

I'm fairly certain Hardwicke will get her way. After all, Stephenie Meyer is said to love the way she handled the material, and she obviously has a little bit of leverage.

I don't think he'd go anywhere near a Twilight movie.
