Stallone "Hopeful" We'll See 'Rambo V'

You kind of had a feeling that
Sylvester
Stallone would leave this door open as long as he could. After all,
Rocky Balboa was a terrific way to wrap up that franchise, and Stallone seemed
reinvigorated by its success, turning his attention to
Rambo afterwards.
That follow-up was not nearly as good as Rocky Balboa,
but it did very well overseas, earning a grand total of $113 million versus a
$50 million budget. That's good enough to assume that home video sales and
rentals and broadcast and cable contracts probably made Lionsgate fairly happy
with the film's overall performance. And now Stallone is keeping his options
open for a cinquel, telling
TMZ, "Rambo hopefully will be back. We've just got
to give you guys a story that's worthwhile."

The funny thing is, the fourth Rambo movie had a pretty good story (or at least an interesting call to action), but once the gunfire rained down on southeast Asia, the movie got really stale. You wonder if Stallone would feel the urge to concentrate on those same things in this film that he did in Rocky Balboa. In that final chapter, our hero was a man out of his own time, who didn't know what the world held for him any longer. Clearly, you can fold some of that sentiment into Rambo V...and then shoot the hell out of a bunch of people.
Stallone also took the opportunity of having a TMZ camera in his face to answer an age old question: "Rambo would kick Rocky's ass. How do you beat the terminator? all you do is make friends with him."
Personally, I don't think we needed Rambo III or IV, so I'm sure another movie is completely useless. I'd almost rather see Even Further Over the Top or Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot Again. The reason Rambo worked initially is because we hadn't seen that story portrayed. Then they went to the current formula with the second Rambo film and it became something we saw all the time. So the story has to really be different to make it, as Sly says, "worthwhile."

When the new Rambo was first announced a few years ago, there was a lot of talk about Rambo taking on Afghan Warlords and an Osama Bin Laden like figure. Perhaps Stallone was nervous about going down that road so soon after 9/11, and eventually turned to Burmese thugs to be on the receiving end of his shrapnel.
If he doesn't go to Afghanistan this time around, then what about Somalia? There is some interesting stuff going on off the coast there. And those pirates look nothing like Johhny Depp or Kieth Ritchards!
I think the problem with the three sequels is that Stallone just put Rambo in the middle of whatever conflict was going on at the time and had him kill a bunch of people. How about this time he takes on a gang of insane bikers who are trying to kill Brigitte Nielson. Oh Right.
