Happy Even More 'Halloween'

We don't have a lot of details yet, but since it's the bullseye of political season, we've beome conditioned to hearing sweeping statements that are completely unsupported by facts. So filter this stuff the same way.

Dread Central has an update on the Halloween franchise, and it looks as if we're definitely getting a sequel. A couple of weeks ago, that news was buried in a story about Dimension planning 19 direct-to-DVD horror movies to be released in the next 12 months. As it related to that story, a DVD-only Halloween movie would hit us eventually, but after a theatrical sequel to the Rob Zombie remake made the rounds.

Zombie won't be coming back, but producer Malek Akkad says Tyler Mane, who played Michael Myers in the remake, will throw on the Shat mask one more time. I know what you're thinking: "Oh, thank God! The faceless, lumbering guy with no dialogue will still be here to hold things together!" Horror fans take these guys pretty seriously. Just ask them about Kane Hodder sometime.

But Mane is the only name attached to the project yet. There's no director on board, though there are rumors that Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury are in the running. They better hurry, however, if they're going to make Akkad's January projection for pre-production with a March shoot to follow.

The remake was a bad movie, primarily because Zombie gets to write his own scripts. His dialogue and plot development is truly awful, and it always has been. He can direct the hell out of some violence, though. The one thing the remake did right was offer more of an origin story, but that also exposed Zombie's ridiculous writing more than any other part of the movie.

The trouble with a sequel is, there's only so much a faceless, lumbering guy with no dialogue can do from one movie to the next, so where the eventual creative team takes it probably won't be a new destination for us.

Rob Zombie as a director, will never be much more than a novelty...sort of like Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips (Though I can't wait to see Christmas on Mars). His movies have never been as interesting as his videos or music...just an opportunity to put Sheri Moon on display!

Perhaps that's true, but he's a better visual director than I would've first thought. And he usually makes pretty efficient flicks. But he needs somebody else writing the scripts.
