New 'Australia' Trailer and Superb Sound Design Featurette
Monday, November 3, 2008 at 8:06PM
In case you missed it over the weekend, it looks like
Baz Luhrmann's
epic
Australia will be exactly that. The reported
runtime for the film is
just shy of three hours, which I think would make it the
longest major film in a couple of years.
Trailer Addict has a new international trailer
for Australia, which stars
Nicole Kidman and
Hugh Jackman,
as well as a behind-the-scenes featurette on the sound design of the film.
Usually, we only consider the way Baz's films look, and I'm guilty of that
myself. But any film has a complex system for creating its soundtrack, and no,
I'm not referring to an album or even the musical score.

Australia will arrive in theaters in the U.S. on
November 26th.

Everything from dialogue to chirping birds has to be captured for the film, and there are a number of ways to do that. Luhrmann takes us on a guided tour of how all these pieces work together, and we get to see firsthand how Foley works and what ADR is all about and how just recording the sounds of the weather can make a world of difference.
It's a really good featurette, a bit like going to class, and it runs about ten minutes long. I should also mention that, not surprisingly, the cinematography in this rather technical piece is really effing good.
